‘The world’s biggest garage sale’
Up to 10,000 bargainhunters jammed the King Edward Barracks in Christchurch over a fivehour period on Saturday in what was advertised as the world’s biggest garage sale. The garage sale, proceeds from which will go to Marylands and other charities, was organised by Radio Avon and the Christchurch West Lions Club. The club's organiser for the event, Mr Tom Stang, said yesterday that the club was very satisfied with the results. The 145 stall holders each paid $lO to Radio Avon, which will deduct its expenses and give the surplus to the club to distribute to charities. The club also ran a hot-dog stall, a jumble stail, a refreshment stall, and a raffle. Mr Stang said the club virtually sold all its own items, though other stall: holders were left with unsold goods by closing time at 3.30 p.m. Eager stall-holders were at the barracks at 7 a.m. to set up their stalls, and by 8.45 a.m. the first of the bargain-hunters started to drift into the barracks. 45 minutes before the official opening time.
