Barnside women suffer loss

Selwyn caused the first upset of the senior women's hockey championship when it beat the highly favoured and talented Burnside team, 4-2, on the first day of competition at Hospital Corner on Saturday. The results in the other three games were all as expected, although for a time it appeared University might cause an upset when it. was able to hold Woolston I scoreless in the first-half. However the University side could not maintain the'same tight defence in the second half and Woolston scored five goals. Carlton was not impressive in beating Woolston II 30, and apart from Selwyn, the only team to play consistently was Harewood which beat SydenhamCashmere 5-0. Results and scorers were: Carlton 3 (S. Haig, L. Reeves, R. Bell), Woolston II 0. Harewood 5 (L. Schulz, H. Carroll, L. Sutherland, C. Smith, R. Jenkins), Syden-ham-Cashmere 0. Selwyn 4 (N. Sheriff 2, B. Mitchell 2), Burnside 2 (J. Allen, L. Doig). Woolston I 5 (D. Hockley 2, S. Duggan, J. Reid, S. Chapman), University 0. UPSET RESULT Selwyn had put a great deal of effort into its preseason preparation and it paid dividends on Saturday. Selwyn rocked Burnside with two early goals by the exper-

ienced Barbara Mitchell. Burnside sobn gained parity arid , for the remainder of the half had a slight edge on the Selwyn side. Using its strong left-flank attack Burnside managed to score one goal by half-time. But Selwyn was not to be outdone and some quick attacks soon after the interval bore fruit. Nicky Sherriff scored two goals—one from a penalty-corner and another from a penalty-stroke. Burnside scored another goal.before the final whistle, but it could not break the well organised Selwyn defence regularly enough to look like forcing a draw. HAREWOOD SUPERIOR It took some time for Harewood to show its true form and it was only in the final 10 minutes before the interval that it took the lead. In the second half the team-work of Harewood improved markedly, and its fitness was also superior and the four goals scored by Harewood was an indication of its dominance. Lyn Schulz and Henrietta Carroll were tireless workers in the Harewood forward line, and its well organised defence was able to cope with the few attacks, mostly of an individual nature, that Sydenham was able to mount. COMMENDABLE DEBUT Woolston 11, playing its first senior match after being promoted from the senior reserve grade, gave a

commendable display • against the strong Carlton' side. Although Carlton held an advantage in possession, and : territorially, it could not - score. There were a number of missed shots, and much determined defence by the young Woolston side. By half-time Carlton was only a goal ahead but scored .. two in the second-half as the constant pressure told on the Woolston defence, but to itscredit the defence remained determined until the end. SECOND-HALF ROMP University coped well with ' a constant stream of Wools- 1 ton attacks in the first-half.' ‘ but after Woolston scored its ■ ‘ first goal soon after the • interval, the stoic resistance ’ of the University defence ■. began to crumble. • ’ Woolston’s fit and skilful . forward line quickly capi- "■ talised on-the slackness in the defence and added four . ■ more goals before the end of ••. the match. Julie Reid was the most, constructive Woolston for- . ward, but she was well supported by the sound posi- , tional play and understanding of the other four for- J wards. All received good "" service from Debbie Hockley at centre-half. University showed some hints of promise, - but will need more determination in all facets of its play to upset • ’ the stronger teams in the competition.
