Christchurch housing
Sir,—About half of the people on the city’s roll are ratepayers who seem to have to foot the bill for drop-outs who demand a one-person per unit accommodation at ratepayers’ expense. These are the many “widows” who enjoy subsidised housing whereas owneroccupier flats could easily have a couple enjoying their evening of life if it was not so easy to keep on a three-bedroom family home for a widow. Our housing problem will never be solved while middle-aged earners are subsidised by, in my case, over 70s. God help them when they get old. The occupier-unit housing in Christchurch is very good.— Yours, etc., JACK HUNTER. April 13, 1982.
