Social democracy
Sir,—Nowhere has Labour stated that the unions are no longer relevant, as indicated by K. Fea (April 15). Strong, responsible trade unionism is vital in any free-trade society, but not as a stepping stone for the S.U.P. Any organisation that has Moscow stooges in its hierarchy is immediately suspect in its motivation. Labour has given a boost to the democratic process by wanting trade union people’to support them voluntarily, not compulsorily. The fact that the extreme Left. is annoyed is an indication that a Labour Party that has universal appeal has no place in their conception of democracy. — Yours, etc.,
J. SHARP. April 15, 1982.
