Ban ‘not unhelpful’ to N.Z.

PA Wellington A ban on Argentinian wool imports by the European Economic Community could have limited advantages for New Zealand, says the managing director of the Wool Board, Mr Hugh Peirse. The community has decided to ban all imports from Argentina in retaliation for the Falkland Elands takeover, leading to Australian - reports that Australia and New’Zealand wool producers would be asked to meet the shortfall. Although the E.E.C.’s . action was “not. unhelpful,” the extent of the advantage to New Zealand would depend

largely on how long the embargo lasted, said Mr Peirse. “Argentina is a direct competitor in some elements of its production, but is much more in competition with Australia than New Zealand” he said. Argentina had already sold its 1981-82 wool production, with a large proportion going to Russia, China, and Eastern Europe. Any direct effect of the E.E.C. embargo would not be felt for some months. “The E.E.C. is not buying very much from Argentina, anyway, which could have been an influencing factor in introducing the embargo,” said Mr Peirse.
