Gang clash at tavern
PA Gisborne A young man is in Gisborne’s Cook Hospital with gunshot wounds to an arm after a clash on Thursday night between two rival gangs at the Wairangahika Hotel, 16km from Gisborne. After widespread inquiries throughout Gisborne, the police arrested a man at a Kaiti house just before 2 p.m. yesterday. The. police first learned of
a confrontation about 9.40 p.m. and while they were on their way to the hotel they were told that shots had been fired in the public bar. An armed offenders squad was called out but when the police arrived at the tavern the gang members had left. After further inquiries a man in his early 20s was found at Te Karaka and taken to hospital for treatirient.
A man, aged 21, was remanded in custody to Monday, without plea, when he appeared in the District Court at Gisborne yesterday on two charges arising from the clash and shooting. He is charged with possessing a cut-down .303 calibre rifle except for a lawful and proper purpose, and with discharging a rifle in a public place, the tavern's public bar.
