Taekwondo finalists
Four Christchurch exponents of the Korean martial art. taekwondo, fought well enough in a special tournament at Wellington .over Easter to qualify for the national finals on May. 8. The tournament run by the New Zealand Taekwondo Federation, attracted about 200 competitors from 36 clubs, including all three established so far in the South Island—Christchurch. Rolleston and Dunedin. Both the Christchurch and Rolleston clubs sent six members, many of whom had not fought in competition before, and the qualifiers, for next month’s finals at the Lower Hutt Town Hall were Chris Moyle and Pete Glassenbury (both Christchurch) and Craig Sutherland, and
Lynda Stevenson (Rolleston). The two black belts, Moyle (a lightweight) and Sutherland •(a heavy-medi-umweight), have been drawn against two North Islanders. Leith Thompson and David Kingston. respectively. Hingston incidentally, is based at Burnham.' In the men’s grade (5 to 3) Glassenbury will meet David Woods, of Wellington, while in the women’s grade (5 to 3) Mrs Stevenson has been drawn against Sharon Northover. of Taihape. Mrs Stevenson said that there had been a "fantastic atmosphere” at the tournament and all the Christchurch competitors had fought well and hard. "We went from 10 in the morning to 10 at night both days," she enthused.
