News International has $7M loss
NZPA London News international. Ltd. owner of "The Times," the “Sunday Times" and “News of the World” newspapers, has announced after-tax losses of nearly $7 million in the first half of the year ended June 30, 1981. This contrasted with an after-tax profit of $26.2 million in the period ended December 31, 1980. News International’s returns do not include Rupert Murdoch's newspapers outside Britain such as the “New York Post.” Mr Murdoch bought “The
Times” and its sister paper, the "Sunday Times," on February 13. 1981. from the Canadian publisher, Lord Thomson of Fleet. "The Times" has been plagued with labour troubles both before and since the purchase, culminating on March 5 when unions agreed to a cut of 600 jobs among the 2600 employed by the two papers and three supplements. Ten days later, Harold Evans. "The Times” editor appointed by Mr Murdoch, resigned at the publisher’s request.
