Shipping news Anniversary celebrated

Columbus Line, one of the pioneers of containerised shipping to New Zealand and Australia, recently celebrated its silver anniversary. Columbus started in 1957 with a break-bulk service between the east coasts ’of North America and South America. In 1962 it opened an office in San Francisco to handle business to Australia and New Zealand. Business grew and, in 1970, a building programme began to replace a fleet of nine break-bulk vessels with three 21,200-tonne container ships. These were designed specifically for the Australia and New Zealand trade. Columbus- New Zealand, the first of the three vessels, first called at New Zealand in 1971. Today Columbus Line operates nine fully-cellular vessels from three coasts of the United States to Australia and New Zealand. ARRIVALS ’ Ngahere (7.06 a.m.) DEPARTURES il.
