Cheap bulk buying for the home

Deep freezers may not be in every Christchurch home yet; but there are so. many that their owners’ desire to save by bulk buying of a large variety of foodstuffs has led traders in many fields, not least meat, to specialise m freezer packs.

A newcomer to the field m the southern suburbs is Angus Bulk Wholesale Meats, at 229 Colombo Street. The name is not new. because Angus bulk shops are also in St Albans and the Hornby Mall, and the site is not new as a butchery, because until the beginning' of last week it had been Mr John Nietrwenhuize's butcher’s shop specialising in Dutch meats. Those Dutch and other special meats such as pepperoni. salami, vet spek, rookworst and leverkaas, to

mention a few, are still there. So is poultry and even special cheeses; but the' emphasis is now on bulk meat orders at considerably reduced prices. The shop has been under the new management, for only the four shopping days last week before Easter, but Mr George Cockburn, the joint owner and manager, says customers have been more numerous and the output has grown in that short time.

Mr Cockburn quotes some of the "specials” this week as

an example of how the home bulk buyer can save. Chuck steak is selling at $2.29 a kilogram, topside steak at $2.99 and rump at $4.19. These prices are for a minimum order of 2kg: below that, prices are normal. Lamb, hogget, wether and mutton will also be cheaper to the bulk-buyer. Colombo Street Angus customers will probably become like their counterparts in St Albans and Hornby and keep a close eye on the specials. Mr Nieuwenhuize has gone out of the retail butchery

business but will continue to supply' the shop with his full range of continental smallgoods from his processing plant. These will be complemented by the Angus shop's own sausages, saveloys and other smallgoods. Mr Cockbum has gone into his own business again after nine years as manager of Shackel Meats in Lichfield Street. Before that he was in his own business.

The joint owner of the Colombo Street shop is Mr Bernard Connolly, who owns the other two Angus outlets. Mr Cockbum has a staff of three butchers to assist him.
