Tennis finalists decided

Gary Lawson and Vernon Aubrey will meet this morning in the final of the 18 years boys’ singles at the Coca-Cola Bottlers' Canterbury junior Easter tennis tournament being conducted at Wilding Park.

Both finalists have derived great benefit from their experiences in the Christchurch senior inter-club competition and this was clearly evident throughout the tournament, which reached a climax with the playing of semi-final matches yesterday. Aubrey was, nevertheless, severely put to the test in his encounter with Nelson's Peter Coman yesterday, having to survive two tiebreaker sets before reaching his place in today’s final. Lawson's match against David McNaughton was in complete contrast. with McNaughton obviously in „ great difficulty throughout and after dropping the first set, 0-6, the promising Woolston junior was forced to retire injured when down 0-1 in the second set. There was a minor surprise in the semi-finals of the 18 years girls’ singles when the top-seeded Delia O’Malley was ousted in straight sets by Catherine Millen, who will meet Leigh Johnson in the final.

As expected, John Honeywell and John Robinson will meet in the final of the 16 years boys’ singles, while the promising Vicki Ratana takes on Suzanne Liggett in the final .of the girls' section.
