Veteran runner wins marathon

“Fourteen or 15 years" of running paid off for a Timaru runner, lan Falvey. yesterday when he was first to finish in the Mount Hutt to Hotel Ashburton marathon.

As well as the Challenge Cup awarded to the outright winner, the 48-year-old Falvey also took the Whiting cup for the first veteran home. The Lovelock club member said after the race that it was his first marathon win in 14 to 15 years of running.

His time was 2 hours. 34 minutes. 11 seconds, almost two minutes clear of Reefton’s Brian Gilmour (2:36.13). The pair were among a bunch of the 85 starters who broke away about mid-way to Ashburton and Falvey drew clear of Gilmour about 6 km out.

The race was run in almost ideal conditions except for a slight head-wind as the runners drew nearer Ashburton.
