Rate rebates to continue

Parliamentary reporter The rates rebate scheme will continue, in spite of the Government’s 3 per cent cost-cutting programme, but the initial contribution from ratepayers before the rebate is calculated will be increased by a third, or $4O. Announcing this, the Minister of Local Government (Mr Highet) said that for the 1982-83 rating year there would be no increase in the income limit which would qualify an applicant for the full rebate.

This will remain at $5700, and applies to income earned during the 12 months to the end of last month. The initial contribution to be made by the ratepayer before a rebate is calculated will rise from $l2O to $l6O. “The net effect of this decision is that single assettested social welfare beneficiaries and single national superannuitants without other income will continue to be eligible for a full rebate,” Mr Highet said.
