Advertising by runners

Sir,—l noted that not all runners in the Queen Street mile races wore advertising, in particular Jenny Overall who did not even have any on her registration number, it is not the organisers who are responsible for these inconsistencies but the Amateur Athletic Association and its rule that a runner must wear advertising that is part of a race number. If the A.A.A. is prepared to bend the rules so that runners can receive money for running and still remain amateurs then why not change the rules so that the true amateur has the option of carrying advertising or not. I have run in sponsored races and have been more than happy to carry advertising for the sponsors. In fact, most runners are prepared to do so. However, if the sponsors were for example a cigarette company then I would not want to carry its advertising; in fact I would probably not compete — Yours, etc., DAVE KENNEDY. April 5. 1982.
