Up the Creek wins trial

Special correspondent Dunedin Up the Creek showed he was ready to make a bold showing fresh up at Beaumont on Saturday when he won his heat at the Wingatui Trials on Sunday. Up the Creek made the pace in the open 800 m heat and dashed away to score by four and a half lengths in 47.1 s on a fast course proper. Lucan’s Double enhanced his prospects for Beaumont when he won the open 1200 m in Imin 15.65. Lucan’s Double went to the front at the 350 m after trailing the pacemaker and won by two lengths from the fast finishing Joyarty. Lucan’s Double was ridden by Nigel Milne, who has the mount on Saturday.

Joyarty was last, about five lengths from the leader until the 400 m and she closed rapidly when given more rein in the closing stages. Joyarty will race next in the Parker Classic at Riccarton on Monday week, bypassing the Sydney Cup. Bally Sin made a good impression when she won the 800 m trial for maidens. Bally Sin disputed the lead and came ahead to score by four lengths. She is a four-year-old mare by Bally Royal from Syndawick trained by Jim Pankhurst. Smart Bijou finished boldly to win the qualifying trial over 1200 m. Billy Bush led all the way in the 1600 m heat.
