6 missing when ship sails
PA Auckland The Polish freighter, Major Sucharski. left Auckland on Saturday without six of her crewmen, who deserted last week.
The Director of Immigration, Mr D. D. Bond, said last evening that the two Poles originally reported to have left the ship — two radio operator crew members — had confirmed to immigration officials through a third party that they intended to stay in New Zealand.
the department had not heard of the others reported to have left the ship, he said, although he was not surprised, because of the week-end. Mr Bond said that if the Poles applied for temporary permits to stay in New Zealand just as others had done, he saw no reason why they should not be issued.
