Taupo bid begins today
PA Wellington The Opposition's court effort to regain the Taupo seat it lost in the General Election last November begins at the Wairakei Hotel, near Taupo, today. If the defeated Labour candidate, Mr J. W. Ridley, is successful with his petition to the High Court and the seat reverts to Labour, the Government's over-all majority in the House will be lost. National's Mr R. N. McClay holds the seat with a 14-vote majority. National has 47 seats in Parliament; Labour. 43; and Social Credit, two.
More than 100 witnesses are expected to be called during the hearing, which is before the Chief Justice (Sir Ronald Davison). Mr Justice Quiliiam. and Mr Justice Bisson. A list of objections to votes and voters in the Taupo electorate was filed in the court last week on behalf of the petitioner, Mr Ridley, and the first respondent. Mr McClay. The other named respondents are the Taupo returning officer. Thomas McGrory, and Bryan Nicholson. The hearing -is expected to last about three weeks.
