Record takings at Malvern show

The drought this summer was a mixed blessing for the Malvern Agricultural and Pastoral Association's show at Sheffield on Saturday: A'fine day resulted in a record gate of $2376, double last year's total, but the dryweather led to fewer entries in the sheep sections. The number of sheep entries was down by more than 100. but several judges said that the quality and condition of the stock on display was "excellent" in view of the drv summer.

The drop in the number, of sheep entries was made up by an increase in the number of entries in the cooking, painting, photography. and indoor-produce sections. ’ The poultry, goat, and donkey classes also had more entries than in 1981.

The grain and seed section had a particularly big number of entries, and the Wrightson N.M.A. and Company Cup for the most points was won by Simon Jenkins. The Royal Agricultural Society gave a silver medal for most points in the section. The harness-horse championship was won by J. S. and D. J. Lilley’s . Starlifter, which was driven by Jim Lilley, who has dominated the show's harness section in the last few years and who has competed at the show for the last 62 years. The large number of entrants in the dog trials did not get the early start expected. Competition was delayed until the earlymorning fog cleared so that both men and dogs could see the sheep they were supposed to herd.

The premier cooking award went to Miss Nancy Vigers, and the most points prize in the preserves section went to Mrs Alison Begg. Mrs L. Prouting won the cup for most points in the flower section and the homecraft prize went to Mrs D. M. Taege.

One of the oldest local residents at the show was Mr Mel Jenkins, aged 92. Mr Jenkins attended the first Malvern show, at Russells Flat, in 1899.
