Tens of thousands in run

An estimated 80.000 people took part in the Round the Bays run in Auckland on Saturday. Some of them are pictured going along Tamaki Drive. A man collapsed and died about 3km from the end of the 10.5 km run. according to the St John Ambulance Association, reports the Press Association. He was Graham Toby Clark,aged 42, of Papatoetoe. Another person collapsed and was taken by ambulance to Auckland Hospital and several other runners with heat exhaustion and heart problems, were treated at roadside first-aid posts. The number of official entrants in the run was 42.731 but previous experience was said to suggest that this number could be doubled because of unofficial runners. First across the finishing line was a roller-skater, Jamie Hawker, aged 23, who was participating in his sixth City to Surf run. Several wheelchair "joggers" took part. The first of these to cross the line, only 2min behind the first runners home, was Graham Condon, aged 33, a regular wheelchair fun run entrant, who is in training for the national paraplegic games. The Army was represented by soldiers in full fatigue gear, running in heavy-duty boots.

The next Christchurch fun run will be the City to Sumner Run on April 18. followed by "The Press" Park to Park "anti-cancer” run on May 9.
