I.H.C. carnival results ‘disappointing’

Organisers of the carnival at Queen Elizabeth II Park on Saturday, to raise money for the Canterbury branch of the Society for the Intellectually Handicapped, were disappointed with the result. About $14,000 was raised but a spokesman for the branch, Mr H. A. Clark, said yesterday that more money was expected. The branch needs $200,000 to maintain its services this year. The carnival coincided* with the finish of the annual City to Surf jog but Mr Clark said that most of the runners did not realise the carnival was being held. "Many of them said that if they had known it was on

they would have brought more money with them,” he said. An estimated 14.000 people attended the carnival. “Many people were happy and that is the main thing,” said Mr Clark. The casino did not attract as many people as hoped because some did not realise it was open during the day. A large number of entries delayed the baby show for more than an hour. Mr Clark said the main attraction was the auction of service fees of several top Canterbury stallions. The auction, which included other items such as cars, motorcycles. and colour television sets, raised about $BOOO.
