Paterson’s golf success continues

By 808 SCHUMACHER Brent Paterson’s great run of success in golf this season continued yesterday at Rangiora when he teamed with his Coringa clubmate, Andrew Bishop, to win the Canterbury men’s foursomes by two strokes. Paterson, a former provincial junior champion, started the year with wins in the Waitikiri and Templeton opens. He was runner-up in the Canterbury stroke championship and fourth in the South Island stroke event, a placing that gained him a place in a four-man New Zealand team.

But Paterson’s partner, Bishop, contributed equally to their success yesterday. He hit some mighty drives, some almost 300 m, and the compact and tidy approaches of Paterson capped off their teamwork. Both putted ably and there were few blemishes in their two rounds of one-over par. After the morning round, Paterson and Bishop held a two-shot lead over four combinations. They were twoover at the turn in the second round but birdied the tenth and finished soundly with eight consecutive pars. However, they were a little fortunate not to have been beaten or at least tied by the father and son combination of Charlie and Russell Start, After a first round 75, the Starts, playing their home course, were two-under after 16 holes in the afternoon and one shot ahead of the Coringa pair. They finished on the outward half and at the eighth

dropped a shot. More disaster came at the ninth. They had a two-over six on the short par-4 to finish with 73 wjiich gave them second placing by a stroke from another Coringa pair, Alan McLelland and Peter Heasley and Dennis Beggs and John Allin. McLelland and Heasley produced the round of the championship, a superb fourunder par 68 in the afternoon. But their title prospects had been dashed in the morning when they finished with 81, a round which included two three-over pars and several missed short putts. They had an encouraging start in the second round with birdies at the second and third holes. An eagle at the par-5 sixth put them four-under and they were five-under when they had a simple birdie at the tenth. The only error came at the twelfth where they dropped two strokes but they retrieved one with a birdie at the last. Heasley was faultless with his pressure putts from between one and two metres and McLelland played his part Leading scores: SENIOR 146 - B- G. Paterson and A. Bishop, 73, 73. 148 — C. Start and R. L.
