Senior cricket averages

Bowlers prospered rather more than batsmen in the senior cricket season, which finished on Saturday, and they were led by a New Zealand bowler of the past and one of the present.David Trist recorded the highest tally of wickets in 51 years, and nis 81 for Lancaster Park is fifth-highest tally on the all-time list However, his remarkable average of 7.9 was bettered by Richard Hadlee, who ' took 37 wickets at only 5.7 each in his few appearances. The other bowlers to take 50 wickets or more were Bob Carter (Sydenham), Les Watson (St Albans) and Gary Saunders (Old Boys). ' Only three batsmen, Dave Dempsey, Tony Collins (both Lancaster Park), and John Larter (St Albans), passed 500

runs, but five others were within 10 runs or less of that mark. They included Rod Latham (Lancaster Park), who had the best average. Kevin Collins helped take the last Sydenham wicket on Saturday, and that stumping gave the Burnside-West wicket-keeper 33 dismissals, equalling the record. Graham Kench (Lancaster Park), without a chance being offered to him in all innings, was one short of the record, while in a productive season for wicketkeepers, Peter Grigg (East-Shir-ley). Ash Hart (Sydenham), and Geoff Wright (Old Collegians) all took 29. The fieldsmen were led by Roy Gearry (Lancaster Park), whose 19 catches have been bettered, twice, only by Brian Hastings.
