African sport plan
A group which campaigned in support of last year’s Springbok tour wants to bring two African sportsmen to New Zealand as a “gesture to the Commonwealth countries.”
The Society for the Protection of Individual Rights said yesterday it would raise money publicly to sponsor a Nigerian sportsman. or woman, for a sports season in New Zealand, “in the hope that by coming into contact with New Zealanders every day they will.take back to Nigeria a greater understanding of New Zealand, our way of lifesand our attitude to personarfreedom.”
S.P.I.R. also said it wanted to sponsor a young South
African as a "gesture of recognition for the tremendous progress made in integrated sport within South Affrica. as shown by the multiracial sides that now represent that country at international level.”
The group said it would "take a lead to try and bring back the sanity and true sporting spirit that once existed in international sport.”
It asked that members of the public send donations towards the cost of the responsibility. and said any surplus funds received would be given .to the Commonwealth and Olympic Games Association.
