Olsen jailed for 18 months

PA Wellington A Masterton carpenter, Norman Charles Olsen, aged 37. was yesterday sentenced in the High Court at Wellington to 18 months imprisonment for the manslaughter of Jack Walter Mannerings late last year. Mr Justice Jeffries also sentenced Olsen to one year on probation. Olsen's counsel. Mr Michael Bungay, said his client acted under extreme provocation when he shot and killed Mr Mannerings on December 14. "I don't think the real truth of the matter has or is likely to emerge." Mr Bungay said. He said Olsen had not initiated the events leading to the shooting. His home had been broken into two days earlier while he was in bed. Olsen had been severely beaten and told not to go to the police. His home had been visited again on the day of the shooting and Olsen' had been subjected to "prolonged and terrifying threats." When Olsen shot Mr Mannerings he was under attack from a bigger, stronger, and violent man. Mr Bungay said.
