NZPA-Reuter Washington - The. United States plans fresh naval manoeuvres lathe Gulf of Sirte. where American aircraft shot down two Libyan planes during exercises last August, the United States Navy Secretary (Mr John Lehman) has said. Mr Lehman told reporters the gulf, which Libya claims as its coastal waters, was an ideal place for manoeuvres since they would not interrupt ordinary commercial traffic in the Mediterranean. He said the gulf was the only area left in . the Mediterranean for missile practice. His statement brought a swift response from Libya, which accused the United States of planning an invasion. The official Libyan news agency, Jana, said in a commentary telexed to NZPAReuter in London: “In this case Libya must get ready to confront a big State and this means a third world war is imminent, for which the American Administration is held responsible.”
