The Kanieri gold dredge now sits idle on the Taramakau River. Kanieri Gold Dredging, Ltd, announced in February that the dredge had completed the economically workable part of the originally selected area more than a year ago and had since been losing money. Dredging continued to maintain continuity of work for the labour force of 66 pending the completion of a new dredge being built at Ngahere, on the Grey River. Men on the payroll of Kanieri will be given preference when work on the new project starts.
