'Just plain crazy’
PA Wellington Talk by the Minister of Lands (Mr Elworthy) that farm , development might have to be slowed and settlements deferred was “just plain crazy,” said Labour’s spokesman on agriculture, Sir Basil Arthur. Mr Elworthy has warned the farming community that the Government’s proposed cuts might also affect farmers. Sir Basil said that the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Maclntyre) had completely
stopped the- purchase, development, and settlement of farms for ballot in the early 19705. “The . writing is on the wall. There will be a lot more Hakatarameas and land for Saudi princes- now-" Sir Basil said. . / “The direct result of this will be static agricultural production, more farm amalgamations as the wealthy buy more farms as tax dodges, and a generation of disillusioned would-be farmers.”
