Mr S. Conway

A respected South Island mountaineer, Mr. Stanley Conway, of Woodbury, Geraldine, died-recently. He was 73. Mr Conway grew up in Christchurch and. at the age of 17. was accepted as a cadet in the New Zealand Railways and posted to Wellington where he trained in clerical work and accounting. . He returned to Christchurch in 1930. after three years training in Wellington, and after 40 years service retired as the department's assistant chief accountant. As a mountaineer. Mr Conway won respect as a valued and sought-after climbing companion. ' He climbed mahy New Zealand peaks in the 19305, some being the first-recorded climbs. Mr Conway organised, and was about to set out as leader of what was to have been the first New Zealand Himalayan expedition, but: World War II broke out and.
