People key to growth
PA Hastings New Zealand's immigration policy should include people from South-East Asia to counteract the lowering birth rate and migration, according to Mr Barry Purdy, the executive director of the Retailers' Federation. "People were the key to any growth in retail sales and were necessary to sus- ' ' ' —
tain any real growth in the economy and to support the present welfare system." Mr Purdy told the retailers' conference. "With a possible improvement in the New Zealand economy and a possible decline in the Australian economy it is very likely that a considerable number of the 150,000 people who left New Zealand ■ may return," he said. “In recent months the migration figures appear to have reversed and nominal increase occurred in the last quarter of 1981.”
