Variety of charges
Eight defendants appeared in the District Court yesterday on charges of unlawful assembly, and some on associated charges, arising from alleged attempts at retribution against a former boyfriend of one defendant. A total of 55 charges have been profferred. In addition to the unlawful assembly they include intimidation of occupiers of properties, carrying offensive weapons, and wilful damage involving several hundred dollars to properties and cars. Two defendants admitted unlawful assembly offences at properties in ’ Edgeware Road. Eastern Terrace. Edwards Street, and Worcester Street, during two nights in early December. Six others elected trial by jury, and evidence in relation to these was heard yesterday before Judge Pain.’ Eighteen witnesses are to be called. The hearing will continue today. David Ernest Dunn, aged 21. unemployed (Mr C. M. Ruane) pleaded guilty to five charges of being a member
of an unlawful assembly, and Darren Malcolm Stuart Patterson, aged 18. unemployed (Mr E. T. Higgins) pleaded guilty to four charges of unlawful assembly. Each was convicted and remanded to March 30 for sentence. Bail of $lOOO. with a similar surety, was granted to each. Six other defendants elected trial by jury on unlawful assembly and related charges. They were Gregory Lane Bamford, aged 20. an apprentice mechanic, five charges of unlawful assembly: Leanda Jane Brewer, aged 19. unemployed, five charges of unlawful assembly; John William Frater, aged 21. unemployed. five charges of unlawful assembly. and charges of damaging a dwelling in Edmonds Street with intent to intimidate the occupants, alarming Norman James Clark by threat of violence, with intent to intimidate him: and carrying an offensive weapon, a length of. chain: Robert Michael Hendrv. aged 20
