Secret import curb?
NZPA-Reuter Belgrade Yugoslavia has upset its Western trade partners by issuing a secret regulation requiring import permits for anything bought from 10 countries that have large trade surpluses with Yugoslavia, according to diplomatic sources in Belgrade. The sources said that the regulation named New Zealand, Australia, Britain, denmark, Iceland, Ireland, Japan, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. The regulation was part of the Government’s campaign to reduce its trade deficit with the West, which amounted to the equivalent of $5BOO million last year. When diplomats had protested to Trade Ministry officials, they had been assured that the regulation was only a monitoring device and was not intended to control trade. Editorial, page 26.
