NZPA-Reuter Johannesburg A violent thunderstorm in mid-afternoon failed to save the English cricket rebels from an eight-wicket defeat by their South African hosts in the first of a three-match series of four-day games today. the winning runs did not come easily, with the. English bowlers extracting some life
from a rain-soaked wicket, but a second innings collapse by the visiting team had left them needing only 37 for victory. Scores South Africa XI 400/7 dec. (S. J. Cook 114, P. N. Kirsten 88, B. A. Richards 66, R. G. Pollock 64 n. 0.) and 37/2 beat English XI 150 and 283 (G. Gooch 109).
