Volare impresses
Special correspondent Palmerston North Volare was at his brilliant best at Awapuni yesterday when he ran a fine trial for the Visitors' Handicap on the first day of the Manawatu racing club’s meeting. Volare has obviously thrived since running a bold race fresh at Trentham last week. Trainer, Malcolm Smith, has secrecy engaged in the race as well. She was in top form yesterday but Smith said that only one of his runners would start in the Visitors’. He will decide later in the week. Volare carried a fair weight when working on a fast course proper. He was timed from the 800 in 48s, the last 600 in a dashing 35.65. It was a top effort. Secrecy has thrived since her impressive winning run at Trentham. She sped over
600 metres in 37s and did it easily yesterday. Regal Corinda and Magnanimo were well matched running 1200 metres in Imin 16sec, the last 600 in 38s. Both are engaged in the Manawatu Breeders’ Stakes but are up against tough opposition. Il Vento was never at top running 800 metres in 50.85, the last 600 in 37.85. He ran bold races at Trentham and will add interest to the Evening Standard Metric Mile. Heidi Belle took 49.6 s for 800, the final 600 in 36.65. She is in the Erin Ryder Newmarket Handicap but her recent efforts have been most disappointing. Miss Chance and Sorry Sir worked well from the 1600 in Imin 465, the last 600 in 39.65. Sorry Sir failed at Napier Park but is capable
of an improved showing in the Kairanga Highweight. Working on the plough Daybreak was not at top over 1000 metres in Imin 5.65, the last 600 in 395. She has freshened since the Carterton meeting last month and.is down to contest the Evening Standard Metric Mile. Carpe Diem was shaded by Finlay over the final stages of 1400 metres in Imin 33.45. the last 600 in 41s. They are rival candidates for" the Kairanga Highweight.
