Host of fishing boats at port
Up to nine Korean and Japanese fishing boats have been berthed at Lyttelton in the last few days. The squid and tuna boats have been fishing off Canterbury and the West Coast for the last six weeks. The boats, many of which weigh about 350 tonnes' are using their time in port to refuel and replenish their supplies. ■ Some of the Korean boats have been unloading their catches into a mother ship, the 999-tonne Chilbosan 1. She has been in port for five days and is due to sail on Friday. Yesterday there were nine fishing boats’ in port, all berthed at wharves No. 2, No. 3. and No. 7. Some leading overseas shipowners have ordered a marine automatic pilot, just developed in Britain by Racal-Decca Marine Controls, Ltd. Company research showed that ship fuel economy depended on reducing the drag from frequent rudder movements. So the new autopilot. DP7BO. was designed to reduce rudder movements by differentiating between movements caused by the weather and the ship's own characteristics. The autopilot, corrects movements caused by the ship's characteristics and leaves those caused by the weather, resulting in greater fuel economy.
