were sung with piano accompaniment. On the other hand, Mozart selected his pieces from the texts written by the prolific Pietro Metastas’io (1698-1783). the most important opera librettist of the eighteenth century. The importance of the two Schubert pieces cannot be over-stressed, although they were composed at a time when the composer was pre-occupied with major works. There is much richness in these works regardless of whether the collector is mainly interested in the vocal contribution or the elegance of the harmony.
