A controversial biography of the Egyptian President, Anwar Sadat, appeared within weeks of his assassination last year. The authors of “Sadat” are two of the most experienced and committed British journalists in the Middle East, David Hirst and Irene Beeson. Sadat had been the first Arab leader to engage the wider attention and sympathy of the West, especially in the United States, whose close ally he had become. The view of Sadat within Egypt and in the Arab world generally was less well known or understood. On the 8.8.C.’ books programme this week (Concert, 7.00 tonight) the 8.8. C. Cairo correspondent, Bob Jobbins, has some strong criticism for the Hirst-Bee-son biography of Sadat. "Nuclear Power for Beginners” and "Capitalism for Beginners” are amongst the titles of a book series published by the Writers and Readers Co-operative. They treat such serious subjects in an entertaining way with the aid of cartoons and jokes.
