Bid for licence abandoned

The Licensing Control Commission will not pursue the hearing of an application for a food and entertainment licence for the former Civic Chambers in Manchester Street, because the applicant has. relinquished its option to buy the building. A licence for a proposed “entertainment centre” on the ground floor of the building was applied for by Berryman Entertainment, Ltd, last year and the matter was heard on August 5. In an interim decision on September 14, the commission indicated that it had encountered difficulty in interpreting the word “entertainment” as it pertained to the case.

The commission said that the proposed entertainment centre would be used for dancing and that that could not be called “entertainment” so far as requirements of a licence were concerned. The secretary of the commission, Mr J. C. Flanagan, said that because the applicant had given up the option on the premises, the matter could not now be pursued. He said, “We regret this because the question of interpretation of ‘entertainment’ may well be of importance in respect of other applications.” The applicant was apparently seeking, other premises. A new application would have to be filed in respect of any other premises.
