Australian rugby champions
NZPA Brisbane I'he Sydney club Randwick became the rugby club champions of Australia with a convincing 22-13 win over Brisbane's Brothers at the Ballymore Oval in Brisbane yesterday. Randwick trailed 7-4 at halftime but ended with three tries to two in a display of running skill that the Australian RugbyUnion hopes the Sydney club’s coach, Bob Dwyer, will carry into the Australian team this season. It was Mr Dwyer's first outing at Ballymore and since he deposed the former Wallabies coach Bob Tertipleton for the Australian spot against Scotland and for a tour of New Zealand later this year. The crowd of 9000 wanted a Brothers win more than ever. However, the $4OOO replica of the Stradbroke Handicap Cup. donated by a local businessman as a trophy for the match, was firmly in the grasp of Randwick midway through the second half. Tlfe Ella brothers. Mark and Gary, were near their peak, with Mark playing well above his arch rival, Paul McLean at fly half. McLean had given his team its first half lead by kicking a perfect 30m penalty before linking with his backline in a sweeping burst down field that saw him go over in the corner unchallenged. For the rest of the match McLean was outclassed and he dropped the ball twice at crucial moments — one when Brothers were in full cry for the line, the second when his team was defending grimly.
