Problems with ‘new’ home turn

The Ashburton County Raciiig Club had its first day’s racing yesterday oh its realigned track. It was quickly discovered that the home turn in its altered form is ho great pleaser among the jockeys. After the first event, the Winchmore Highweight, two senior jockeys, Ali Robihson, and Jim Collett, said they had to “drag” their mounts arouild the home turn. After seeking the views of Robihson and Collett, the stipendiary steward, Mr Bruce Craik, addressed those riders with mounts in the second race on the pro-

gramme, and told them to watch for what could have been a trouble spot on the home turn. If the cautionary word from Mr Craik had some effect it did not completely eliminate some drifting to the right around the home turn in later races. Several runners made a pronounced drift away froin the inside towards the centre of the track, and that could have spelt trouble if the opening event had been any other than a highweight, the field for which could muster a good number of strong and experienced horsemen.
