Powley was not insured

PA Dunedin The death of Powley represents a total loss to’Hector Anderton sen., her Wingatui owner and trainer.

Powley was not injured and Anderton, who is 76 had turned down big offers for the more to keep her for racing and breeding. “It would have meant giving away one of my horses a year to have her insured. “I have had a .tremendous kick out of racing her and wanted to retain her for myself and the family. She has really kept me alive,” said Anderton who has been training horses for fifty years. Anderton turned down an offer of $500,000 for Powley. “She would have been worth a million dollars as a brood mare," he said. “The real shame is that we have no other filly from this family,” Anderton had bred Powley from a mating of Noble Bijou and Mellay Vite. He obtained Mellay Vite in an arrangement with the mare’s owner, Mrs Doreen Casey, of Dunedin. He had trained Mellay Vite to win a Metropolitan Handicap at Riccarton. He is a part owner of Noble Bijou, Mrs Casey bred the first foal from Mellay Vite, Gentle Powley was the second foal.

Mellay Vite was then sold to an Auckland owner. Anderton has had misfortunate with two close relations of Powley—Waronui and Parlez Vite. Waronui was a brother of Mellay Vite, and Parlez Vite a half-brother.

Waronui, the South Island’s top three-year-old in the 1976-77 season had to be put down after his condition deteriorated.

Parlez Vite, a most promising steeple-chaser, collasped and died in training. Powley won 17 races, gained six seconds and two fourths in 28 starts, for $139,385 in stakes. She won the $40,000 George Adams Handicap at Trentham in January, the South Island Thoroughbred Stakes, at Geraldine, White Robe Lodge Stakes, at Wingatui, and Aluminium Smelter Stakes, at Invercargill this season. Her wins as a three-year-old last season included the New Zealand One Thousand Guineas at Riccarton, the Dunedin Guineas and the Southland Guineas.
