State’s second casino to open in May
Launceston is the site for Tasmania’s second hotel-casino convention centre. The Launceston Federal, only six kilometres from the centre of the city, will be opened in May. The $2O million project is situated on an 85 hectare site which is being developed to provide golf, tennis, swimming, horse-riding and squash facilities. The main administration and services block will include a 500-seat conference centre, eight bars, health centre, discotheque, two restaurants, and accommodation for 208 guests. . The casino, which will be open from 1 p.m. to 3 a.m. seven days a week, will feature American roulette, Blackjack, Two-up, Mini-dice, and Keno. The casino will be closed on only two days of the year — Christmas Day and Good Friday. The colonial-style building will have
two levels. The main block ground floor will contain the lobby and reception area, the cabaret room, public casino, three bars, and a restaurant. The upper level will house a V.I.P. casino, convention centre, a la carte dining room, and three more bars. Federal Hotels, the company behind Hobart’s Wrest Point Casino, has a 50.9 per cent interest in the Launceston project. The other partners are Enlan, a subsidiary of the Examiner Newspaper and Northern Television, Ltd (25.1 per cent), and Jennings Industries (24 per cent). i The Launceston Federal will play a vital role in boosting convention facilities in Tasmania. The State Government is keen to see this market grow, particularly during the seasonal trough period between June and August.
