Island well served by airlines
Tasmania is well served by Airlines providing direct links to the Australian mainland. Both Ansett and TAA have regular daily services from Hobart and Launceston to Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney, as well as connecting flights between the two Tasmanian cities. But only Hobart has international status, based on the twice-weekly connection across the Tasman to Christchurch. Incidentally, passengers returning home
on this route should allow 90 minutes as the check-in period and not forget to have ?Aust2o ready for the local departure tax. Limited duty-free facilities are available, but the range of goods is not as good as that provided at the bigger airports on the mainland. In addition to the two
major Australian domestic carriers, smaller commercial and charter airlines provide a valuable network of services around Tasmania to provincial airports with, in some circumstances, connecting flights to Melbourne. Visitors should take the opportunity of making a sight-seeing flight over
Tasmania’s otherwise inaccessible wilderness areas, particularly around the spectacular south-west region. Scenic flights are also operated out of Launceston Airport by Scenic Air, a private airline which includes packaged tours and meals. Aircraft are also available for private hire.
