South African policies
Sir,—l heard on the radio this morning that Cliff Richard has done more for change in South Africa than HART. Indeed, he has had signs at his South African concerts, reading, “All races welcome.” I bet when the Afrikaner saw that he just fell upon his knees and shouted “Save me Jesus! I have seen the writing on the wall! I shall remove apartheid!” I was in South Africa in 1977, and my shame is that I did not take such an opportunity to put a nail in the coffin of white supremacy. I could have had a garage sale and proclaimed, “All races welcome,” but alas I have not Mr Richard’s stunning perception of social conditions.—Yours, etc., D. A. J. SMITH. March 10, 1982.
