I.H.C. short of funds
The Canterbury branch of the Society for the Intellectually Handicapped has financial problems in spite of a recent successful national appeal by the society, according to a spokesman for the branch, Mr A. Clark. He said that the branch needed another $200,000 to maintain its services this year. The branch’s income during the last four yearshad not kept pace with inflation. In the same period the branch had faced a steady increase in demand for its services.
Mr Clark said: “The Government has indicated that there will be a limit to future subsidies for our family-home building programes, and we are under an obligation to give some pre-
ference to people waiting for discharge from Templeton and Sunnyside Hospitals.
“It is sad that we are heading towards financial difficulties at a time when the community is just beginning to understand the need to shift resources into the area of community care for intellectually handicapped people.” To help raise money, the branch will hold a carnival at Queen Elizabeth II Park on March 27 in conjunction with the City to Surf fun run. More than 30 organisations will take part in the carnival, which will start at 9.30 a.m. Attractions will include sideshows, a sky-diving display, competitions, and a treasure hunt. Applications have been
made tor permits tor a casino and a liquor booth at the carnival. A horse-racing commentator, Mr Reon Murtha, will conduct an auction at the carnival. “A highlight of the day will be the bidding for gifted service fees for 13 of the top stallions in Canterbury, including Lord Module, Wee Win, and Locarno,” Mr Clark said. “Annual membership of both the Canterbury Jockey Club and the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club will also be up- for grabs.” Mr Clark said that two new cars, motor-cycles, two-colour-television sets, and a B.M.X. bicycle would also be auctioned.. The carnival would be held annually if it was successful.
