Lieutenant-Colonel R. S. Dearing, of Auckland, has been appointed Colonel (plans and development) on the Army General Staff in Wellington. Colonel Dearing, who was promoted colonel on taking up his new post, is responsible to the Chief of the General Staff for policy matters in these fields. Colonel Dearing is • a graduate of the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. He is also a graduate of the Australian Army Staff College at Queenscliffe and the Australian Joint Services Staff College, Canberra.
He has held a wide range of appointments, including New Zealand instructor at the Australian Officer Cadet School, Portsea, - secbnd-in--command of'the Singaporebased Ist Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment, and commander of the Manawatu, Wanganui, and Taranaki Army area. In 1966 Colonel Dearing was on active service in Borneo, when he commanded the N.Z.S.A.S. detachment. Before taking up his present appointment in February, he. was deputy director of training in the policy branch at Defence Headquarters, Wellington.
