Inquiries into yacht’s loss

PA Wellington Inquiries are continuing into the sinking of the' Sofia, the schooner which went down in a gale off North Cape two weeks ago. Investigations are being conducted by the Superintendent of Mercantile Marine, Mr David Young. One of the Sofia’s 17 crew drowned and the other 16 were rescued by a Russian ship after five days in two liferafts. The inquiry is not yet official, but Ministry of Transport officials are believed to be' concerned about a number of aspects of the drama. Officials are trying to determine the condition of the schooner’s hull before she sailed from Nelson where she had been under repair for the last year. Survivors reported hearing a loud cracking noise below decks before she went down.
