Russel Garnett a double winner
The lightly-raced Russel Garnett, trained at Kumara by Bill Cummings looks as though he could prove to be one of the bargains of the 1979 national selected yearling sales. He became one of two double winners—the Bachelor Star four-year-old, Star Skipper, was the other—when he beat Gnedin Lass and Royal Son in a keen finish to the W.G.P. Cuningham Stakes at Greymouth on Monday. He is raced in partnership by Mrs Kath Williams, of Nelson, and Mr Bert Quintal of Kaikoura, who purchased him for $3500 when he was offered on behalf of Mr J. C. Manson, of Dunedin. Mr Quintal has had long association as a trotting
owner, with Cummings preparing a number of winners for him. For Mrs Williams itis her first venture into trotting but she has enjoyed success in the galloping field where her husband Ross, has had a number of winners.
It was appropriate that Russel Garnett’s first two wins should come at Victoria Park. He is by the Meadow Skipper horse, Nordel Skipper from Resultant, an unraced member of the family which produced so many winners for the late Mr Jim Steel, for many years a leading official of the Greymouth club. Russel Garnett is closely related to such fine performers as Falsehood, Dandy Briar and Doctor Barry so it is not surprising that he is improving with age.
