Armaments
Sir,—The awe-inspiring armament race between the United States and the Soviet Union amounting to thousands of billions of dollars must soon end in economic disaster or war unless sanity prevails. It was the Soviets who started the armament race immediately after the World War II armistice was signed with Germany. The build-up of Army divisions and armaments was phenomenal and alarmed the United States. It was obvious what their intentions were. Today the Soviets are very short of food because of three years drought. The importation of vast shipments pf grain and dairy produce is essential; so is their need to import technical components needed in the factories. A total embargo now by the Western world may be the means of cutting aggressive Russia down to size — and then a peace agreement. — Yours, etc., ’ < ’ 1 '. A. DELHANTY. . March 8, 1982.
