Nun killed by falling hearth
PA Hamilton Labour Department officials are investigating a construction site at St Mary’s convent school in Putaruru where a nun died when she was struck by a concrete hearth. She was Sister Rose (Maureen Agnes O’Meara), aged 53, a teacher at St Mary’s. Sister Rose had apparently walked on the concrete hearth on Friday night when it tilted and she slid through the. floor to a storage room below. The slab collapsed on top of her. Police say the slab had earlier been checked for soundness by builders who
had been relining the storeroom with fire-resistant material. ' .
