Dutchy top chance at Manawatu

Special correspondent Wellington Dutchy ran his rivals ragged at Hutt Park last Friday and there seems little reason why he should not repeat the treatment in the Manchester Pace, first leg of the Manawatu Trotting Club’s T.A.B. double this evening.

In Dutchy’s favour are a front-row draw and his liking of dirt tracks. He has won four races, all on similar surfaces to the Manawatu track. ■ '• ; "

Tonight Dutchy will start from No. 3. He has the pace to take up the lead from the start and if he does his rivals could well be struggling. At Hutt. Park nis driver Tom Fox. took him to the front after 350 m and had the. race at his mercy thereafter. His time for the 2400 m was a quick 3min 4.3 sec. Jaydonna Viva was disap-, pointing at the Wanganui,, meeting. The mare had agood run throughout, and, though running on a little towards the end, could only manage fifth. The second-row draw may have been the reason for her; failure but this evening she has drawn nicely at No. 2. Her front-running abilities could test those of Dutchy’s if she is able to secure the lead.

Macdoon had no chance at Wanganui after one hopple pin failed to release. He finished eighth. Macdoon is a better horse than his recent form shows and he could provide the upset in this field. Ella’s Pride has run sound races lately, as has Out to Dream. Lady Wainui likes the course and could fill a place. Red Mark has not raced for a while but his form credentials make him the leading chance in the second leg of the double, the Carlton Pace. Two wins, a second and a third in his last four starts should see Red Mark start favourite in the race but he may not have things all his own way. Black Speed, Butler’s Choice and Crafty Fella all have winning form in recent starts. Any of this trio are capable of winning with Birdie Twice, with the inside draw, likely to upset.
